The Vegetarian (Autumn 1999) 'The Greenhouse' is situated in Hartington Gardens, a pleasant cul-de-sac, just a short walk from the city centre. This totally vegetarian guesthouse has been put together, with a great deal of loving attention, by owners Hugh Wilson and Suzanne Allen. Starting with the premise that 'The Greenhouse' should be exactly what they themselves would want to find in a good guesthouse, Hugh and Suzanne began by ignoring what the textbooks have to say about room occupancy rates, decoration styles and materials and instead decorated each room as though it were a bedroom in their own house. Indeed, one room actually has the furniture from their old flat in it. The effect is to make 'The Greenhouse' seem welcoming and homely from the first moment you arrive, always helped by a warm welcome from Hugh. The breakfast menu is, as you would expect, first class and much of it is suitable for vegans. The portions are of 'Scottish' standards enough to keep you going until it's late enough in the day to take a wee dram with lunch. Special diets can also be catered for. The same care shown on the menu extends to other items such as the soaps and shampoos, which are free of all animal products and not tested on animals, the pillows and duvets which are polyester, and even the paint on the walls, which was chosen because of its environmental credentials. |
